If you see someone walking down the street in winter, swaddled in a furry, fuzzy bundle of largely pink interwoven with orange and black bits, that's probably me. Pink scarves are a favourite of mine. Pink is not usually my colour, people would say: it is too vibrant, too pink, too cherry for someone whose face turns the colour of a sun-ripened tomato with the slightest hint of physical exertion. It's also the colour associated with being stereotypically girly or feminine, and often derided. But I don't care let the haters hate, because this is my favourite colour for a scarf. This would go for any colour deemed too bold, too unsuitable, too undecorous. It's my favourite colour for a scarf precisely because it's so ridiculous you only live once - why conform to safe colours? Gender is a construct who's to say that pink is necessarily girly? So wear what you like and forget about everyone else. Besides, my mum bought me that scarf.
I can't believe I'm seeing that safety boots are making a come back in the fashion stakes. While safety boots are very practical, and a necessity for many jobs, its history in the field of fashion has been a chequered one - with some spikes in fashion where a craze sweeps through the masses and you see everyone suddenly wearing them. And we seem to be going through another wave in 2011.
It's refreshing to see this new style too - a more robust fashion statement than the previous ones I've seen. I think the fashion movement is tied to music trends - I'm noticing that both metal and gothic genres are becoming more popular and tough boots and these musical niches are inextricably linked!
What's even better is I have two great pairs at home and I love wearing them regardless of what I'm "supposed" to wear according to the fashion gurus - so it looks like I'm inadvertently fashionable this year!
I loved the picture of these shoes in the L. L. Bean Catalog, but didn’t seriously consider buying them. I have such a difficult time finding shoes in my size that I just shrug my shoulders at the pretty ones, expecting that they wouldn’t fit my feet which are wide - in fact, I often have to buy shoes from specialists who stock shoes for large feet. And since the closest L. L. Bean store is about a 40 minute drive from where we live, I didn’t want to try ordering the shoes online just to have to drive to the store to return them. One day I was at the Tyson’s Corner Shopping Mall for another reason and I thought I’d stop in to browse for a present for my sister. I passed by the shoe section and spotted those shoes, the Mountain Laurel Multisport, a Mary Jane style. The shoes were beige with pink and “dark mulberry” trim. I thought I’d give it a try and see if they had my size. To my surprise, they did have my size, eight and a half wide in stock. The saleswoman brought out the size I asked for. She also brought out a size eight wide. I tried on the eight and a half shoes and was surprised they were a little loose. I tried on the eights and they fit! Velcro straps allowed for better adjustment around the top of my foot. The shoes were $79. A little pricey for my budget, but at least I didn’t have to pay shipping. I get a lot of compliments when I wear these shoes, and everyone wants to know where I bought them. I love these Mary Janes not just for their looks, but because they are the most comfortable shoes I have.
Toys for kids changed so much during the last 15 years. Even now, small kids have fashion ranges too - from SoGoodNight pyjamas to I Love Gorgeous.
As for toys, these days most are electronic or has something electric in it. When I was a kid, no such things existed. I had a carpet on which a city was printed. I would pass hours playing with my little cars on that carpet while creating several stories and making car races. My second favourite toy was definitely those plastic blocks with which you could almost build anything you wanted to. Again, I had lots of hours of fun. With these toys, waiting for my parents at the daycare was not an issue at all. Sometimes, I even made them wait a couple of minutes to finish playing with the toys and of course, to put them back in their respective tray and storage emplacement. As I grew up, the new generation of electronic toys appeared. Game boys, Nintendo’s and video games were created. I wonder what will be the long-term impact on the new children generations.
I have always been fascinated with music, especially the music that can give you chills and bring a tear to your eye... There is nothing like getting so lost in music, that the whole world just fades away. You can have the worst day of your life and come home to listen to Miss Karen Carpenter,or Miss Roberta Flack.... and the world is once again a beautiful, innocent place once and for all...forget all the fashion we see associated with music - these stars are pure professionals. If I could just have that impact on people, and know that I've helped them escape, if for only a little while, that would be my ultimate dream job... Not all music has to be so clear and precise, I'm a huge fan of Carol King, Carly Simon, James Taylor and so on... There isn't one person with any kind of soul inside of them that can listen to that music, and not be entranced by the "Pureness" of the stories they tell.... If I could do that for people, and make them feel the way I do while listening to my favorites, that would certainly do it for me. Happy, sad, haunting, amusing, I would love to bring it all to the world around me.
A baby swing is one of the most helpful playthings you can get for your baby boy or baby girl .It doesn’t just provide them with hours of fun and play, it also develops their important motor and auditory skills. If you’re thinking about buying one for your child, here are a few things to remember:
You must get a swing that is stable and can withstand the weight of your baby. You don’t want it to fall apart while your child is using it, right? Don’t look at flimsy swings and instead, find one that’s made of sturdier material.
You should also consider your baby’s safety and comfort. There are swings with padded seats, which your baby will appreciate. But more important are the safety straps. Make sure that they do not tear easily and that they lock properly. Also consider the fact that as your child grown, he or she will become more playful and might try to jump from the swing. So, ideally, you should go for swings with 5 point straps, which cover your baby’s shoulders, waist, crotch areas and keep him in place.
It has long since been said that diamonds are a girls best friend, however, lets not forget that pearl earrings also have a high place on that valuable pole. For whatever the reason when a special event rolls around like a birthday or Christmas celebration, girls always look for something in the jewelry department.
While most forms of jewelry will be appreciated, in some cases a decent set of pearl earrings is the only thing that will suffice. When trying to show that special someone that they are the most important thing in your life, a set of pearl earrings is all that you will need to seal the deal.
Jewelry says a lot to a girl anyway, but pearl earrings will take it to the next level as far as the two of you are concerned. Finally, if you have messed up so badly with your spouse and hope to make amends, spend a little on some pearl earrings and hopefully it will smooth things over.
When I wife and I decided to get married, back in 2002, we knew we wanted to do something more than just celebrate our love for each other, and take vows in front of our friends and family. We wanted to do something fun, something creative, that everyone would be able to enjoy. With this in mind, we decided to go with a “Renaissance Theme”, both for the wedding and the reception that followed. We found a website that specialized in selling period garb (jerkins, boots, peasant shirts, etc) and picked up something for myself and my groomsmen to wear. Even the wedding tiaras we looked through had to have a renaissance theme too. My wife had her dress handmade by her mother, in a style to match my own, and we found these gorgeous red velvet dresses for the bridesmaids to wear . When we sent out the invitations, we did them in sort of “heraldic announcement” style, in assumed Renaissance-style wording, and encouraging all who attended to dress up in the event theme (although we certainly did not require it.) One of my favorite moments was that the minister we had gotten to perform the ceremony had surprised us, by shaving his hair into a ring, like the old friars used to do back in the day. We were really touched that he went to that level to “keep with the theme”, but he had a lot of fun with it. Indeed, I would say that everyone had an absolutely wonderful time, and that creating a “theme” that everyone could participate in made the wedding stand out from the ordinary. For our tenth wedding anniversary, my wife and I are looking into retaking our vows...in the traditional Klingon manner!
My husband doesn't do things by half. I was at the local football - I always watch my beloved Portsmouth when the scoreboard at half time scrolled a rather startling message - it was Steve asking me to marry him. It must have been my Steve as he was next to me saying "look at the scoreboard, look at the scoreboard". I felt embarrassed and excited - and said "yes" of course. Steve then picked up his mobile, called someone, and the scoreboard flashed : "she said yes!" - and then a big roar from 20,000 fans! It was incredible! We got married on the pitch - I was in my full wedding dress and muddy wedding shoes - he had his suit on too. We both had numbers on our back (he was 1, I was 2) with his family name - yes just like a football kit - the invited members were in the stands, cheering us on.
Well it's Christmas (don't I sound like Noddy Holder!) - and it's also cold. Very cold. So there's no alternative but to stay indoors, forget any notion of travelling overseas (have you seen Heathrow? Don't go there), and enjoy the festive TV schedule.
For Christmas gifts, I've bought everyone winter warmers of one variety or another. One particular favourite that I think will go down well are the pashminas I've bought for the women in my family. They're stylish and warm, and easy to fold away should they feel too warm (not likely for a while!).
It's always difficult to know what to buy people for Christmas, isn't it? It seems everyone has everything they need these days making it all the harder to find something useful and original. It seems I spend more and more time hunting for gifts as each Christmas comes and goes. Anyway, here's hoping Christmas 2011 will be a lot warmer than this one!
I'm not a big fan of fashion, and don't consider myself to be super fashionable as a whole. I don't care for bridal lingerie, leggings, or any of the latest trends. I am interested in fashion and like to look nice, but I rarely take the time, effort, and money necessary to be as truly fashionable as I could be. With that being said, my favorite fashion items are pretty much all accessories. I have a bracelet that I bought a few months ago that I absolutely love wearing with any outfit I can wear it with. I also have a necklace and pair of earrings that are very special to me, and that I wear to any formal occasion I can. I have a few pairs of earrings that I rotate between to wear almost every day. These items have all become fashion staples for me, allowing an otherwise boring outfit to have a little pizazz and visual interest. I'm always looking for new accessories for just this reason - they're small and can be less expensive than larger fashion items, but they can have a big influence on how an outfit looks.
