On the Battle to Keep My Hair Long During My Childhood

I had a curious liking toward Jesus as a child - hear me out here, I'm not going to preach to you(!). I was not actually attracted towards His way of life or His gospel. I was actually an ardent admirer of His flowing hair! I decided to sport the same style when I grew up. My mother at the time was selling wholesale hair products supplies and so she at first encouraged me to grow my hair long, before changing her mind (of which, more later!).
By the time I was doing my Degree at university, I was a veritable hippy with hair down past my shoulders. It was the fashion at the time, so I hardly stood out. Though my mother was a strict follower of Jesus she just could not accept my long hair while I was at university - she feared I would be unemployable with my hair as it was. Here the familiar long haired son bred not only contempt but silence as well. I did not want to hurt her. At the same time I did not want to lose my big following. Finally I reached a compromise. I promised her that I would crop my hair on the day I completed my degree. My mother was not at all certain about me fulfilling the promise and much to her surprise I cut my hair on the day I graduated.
